Backup Your Data Online with Dropbox

by Vlatte on February 24, 2010

I like Dropbox because I can backup files for free, share files or folders with others, and access files from multiple computers. Plus it’s easy to setup and use.

Learning About Dropbox

I went to the Dropbox website and read about all the neat features:

  • File Sync
  • File Sharing
  • Online Backup
  • Web Access
  • Security & Privacy
  • Mobile Device Access

I took an online tour that covers the following topics:

  • What is Dropbox?
  • File Sync
  • File Sharing
  • Online Backup
  • Undo and Undelete
  • What does it replace?

I checked out the different pricing plans.

  1. Basic (up to 2 GB)
  2. Pro 50 (up to 50 GB)
  3. Pro 100 (up to 100 GB)

The Basic plan is free with up to 2.0GB, yet for each referral you get another 250 MB of bonus storage for free. The limit for bonus storage is an extra 3.0GB so you could potentially end up with 5.0GB of free storage.

How It Works

I signed up for a free online account, and downloaded the free Dropbox program to my Windows PC. When you launch the program it installs a Dropbox directory to a place of your choosing.

Each file you put in the Dropbox folder is synchronized to your online account. From another computer you can access the online files. Or you can install Dropbox on another computer and the files will be synced between both computers and the online storage.

You can also share individual files or entire folders with other people. This is a good way to share picture files between friends or family without having to resort to burning a CD or transferring via USB stick.

Dropbox and the iPhone

I also downloaded the free Dropbox iPhone app from iTunes. I can now access my Dropbox files from my iPhone. This includes Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files that are easily displayed.

I love Dropbox. I have a PC for work and a Mac at home, and it makes transferring files between the two easy and painless.
