Jing software allows you to capture screen images or record video of your on-screen actions. You can get a free download of the Windows or Mac OS version at TechSmith dot com. Jing has a Free and Pro version.
Both versions come with 2GB of storage at Screencast dot com, which allows you to share your videos or images with others. They both have a maximum recording limit of five minutes for video capture. Screen capture is in PNG format.
The Pro version has a yearly cost of $14.95 and includes MPEG-4 video format, unbranded videos, recording from a web cam, and instant sharing with YouTube.
The free version’s video format is SWF. This may be a concern if you want to email video files to others since they would need the Jing software or the codec to view the video. However, uploading to Screencast dot com eliminates this issue by providing a seamless way to view videos with a browser.
TechSmith also has a 30-day free preview for the full version of Camtasia Studio or Camtasia for Mac. Be careful about using this preview. You just might get used to all the features and support videos and find them hard to live without. Camtasia software runs just under $300, but the educational pricing is more affordable, for those who qualify.
In the video below I use Camtasia Studio to show an overview of Jing. (If you can’t view it, download QuickTime)
See the Jing video at ScreenCast dot com.
Here is the same Jing video embedded into this blog post.
