Criteria for Choosing My Top Ten List

With all the top ten lists coming out at the end of the year, I felt a responsibility to put in my two cents. But do I choose the most frequently used apps or my favorite apps? These are not necessarily the same list. And can I pare it down to just 10? That’s a pretty tall task.

I decided on a two-fold approach. First I’ll give a top ten list of apps based on frequency. The apps I use the most. This is what you see below. But since there are so many great apps that need to be mentioned, I created a second list.

The criterion for the second list is this: I won’t remove the app from my iPhone. So my second list will be a “Do Not Remove” list for 2009 that I will reveal in my next post.

Top Ten Apps

(in no particular order)
App: USA Today
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Years of traveling on the road and having this newspaper delivered to my hotel room each morning has endeared me to this news source.

App: Bloomberg
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Great source of financial information. Keeps me up-to-date on the market and stock prices.

App: AP Mobile
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Great source for news, with push notification for breaking news.

App: Tweetie 2
Cost: $2.99
Reason for use: Simple and powerful way to stay in touch via Twitter. (And worth the money if you compare it to the free Tweetie app.)

App: Facebook
Cost: Free
Reason for use: The best way to keep up with Facebook.

App: Kindle for iPhone
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Reading is one of my pastimes and this app is a great way to read books. Book prices are good too.

App: Evernote
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Place to keep ideas or things I see on the web. Information syncs with web cloud and desktop computer; integrated with free desktop program.

App: Dropbox
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Place to backup files on the cloud, share across computers, and share with others. More info at their web site.

App: ESPN Score Center
Cost: Free
Reason for use: Keep track of sport scores, with push updates and alerts for your favorite teams.

App: NBA League Pass Mobile
Cost: $39.99
Reason for use: Watch NBA games, since I’m a huge NBA fan. Works pretty good for me over wi-fi or 3G. Go Lakers!

I got Tweetie 2 a few days ago, after you recommended it to me, and I really like it.

Dropbox has an iPhone app? I have Dropbox on my home and work computers, and I really like it. Being able to sync my photos, videos, etc, on my iPhone with my Dropbox files would be great. I’ll check it out.

Thanks for doing all the prep work for me!
